Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions that aren't answered here we'd love to hear from you!

Can I buy raw fleece from you?

Yes! With 3000 sheep we select only the very best fleeces to offer to spinners, felters and other crafters. All our fleeces are Blade Shorn and sorted at shearing on special grading tables to remove the dirty skirt, breech, belly and crutch fibres - spray marking, veg matter and felted areas are also removed.

The special fleeces available on this site are given extra attention when sorting and grading to ensure even quality fibre is available - length, strength and lustre and these won't all be listed online – we welcome enquiries about specific quantities, different colours, when our next clip will be available etc. and can also arrange farm visits by appointment to see and feel what we have available.

Do you sell in bulk?

Absolutely. We have a large flock, which means we often have bulk quantities of wool available at reduced rates. This is perfect for developing textiles products including yarn and homewares.

We don't have stockist quantities available in our current range of yarns, however we can offer wholesale rates on larger orders (minimum £400 retail including VAT). Please contact us for further information.

Can I visit the farm?

We welcome visitors by appointment. We recognise that sometimes it's just better to be able to see and feel products before you buy them and understand where they come from. As we're a working farm and host private events we need to know when to expect visitors so we can ensure someone is around to meet you and show you the goods we have available. Contact us if you'd like to arrange a visit.

We also host two FREE Farm Open Days at the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes so look out for these dates that are a celebration of our wool harvesting times.

What breeds of sheep do you have?

Our flock of around 3000 comprises mostly Shetland crosses. Our flock of pure Shetland ewes are crossed with improved Romney genetics so the majority are Shetland x Romney. We also have a lustre flock with Shetland x Teeswater and Shetland x Blue faced Leicester, plus a handful of Wensleydale, English Leicester and mixes of all these breeds. We have a small number of Merino x Shetland/Gotland, which give an amazing fleece and access to pedigree Ryeland, Dorset and Black Welsh Mountain from show winning flocks too.

Where can I find out more about the farm?

Our sister site www.fernhill-farm.co.uk has a wealth of information about our holistically managed farm, event venue for weddings and festivals, and our meat boxes and food produce.
